A day in a Storyteller’s life…
Good Morning Meenu, Ma’am. Will you be coming to my class?”, asked someone behind me as I just entered the school and was climbing up the stairs to go to my designated room.
I turned and looked back. It was ofcourse a familiar face.
“ Which grade are you from?”, I asked
“Grade 3 Ma’am”.
I pressed my lips and then said,
“Ohh! I am really not sure if Grade 3 is there in my schedule of sessions today.”
“Ma’am, why Ma’am. We want to have your storytelling session too!”, she replied and I could feel that tone of disappointment in her voice.
Hmm… I was totally helpless.
I reached the first floor and was about the enter the room when I heard another voice, this time, right in front of me.
“Hello Meenu Ma’am. Do you remember me? ‘The Coughing Girl’ from Grade 5.”, she asked me with a beaming smile.
Oh yes! “Coughing Girl” is what she had named herself because of her continuous cough the last time I had gone to their class. 😊
“Ofcourse! I remember you!”, I said.
And then came the question I was ofcourse dreading.
“Ma’am, Are you going to be telling stories for us too today?”
‘Ahh… Err… Well… I don’t think so. Grade 5 is next time!”, I replied apologetically.
“Ohhh!!!! Ma’am. We want to have your class too”, she said with a bit of disappointment and ran into her class.
Well… while it is indeed sad to see someone getting disappointed, honestly, I was also feeling so good and proud!
Oh yes! Why will I not?
When your listeners are eagerly waiting for your story sessions, isn’t that something?
What more a storyteller can ask for?
And that’s how my day began at TGSB on Aug 30th , when I had gone for my scheduled story sessions. This time I also had a couple of teachers who were witnessing my sessions as it happened through the day.
“Wow! This needs quite some energy and practise!
I am also enjoying this!”, said one.
“You are amazing!”, said another.
“Ma’am , I want to listen to your stories every day!”, said a Grade 2 student as he was leaving post my session.
And the icing on the cake,
“Ma’am, can you close your eyes?”, said a Grade 2 student. I wondered why and hesitatingly closed my eyes.
The next moment, all the students were around me hugging!
Ooooooh!
No words to describe the feeling!
It was day of Fairy Tale classics and folktales that I shared with Pre-Primary till Grade 2 students. Yet another satisfying day.
